Billy FlorenceThe road to success is always uphill. It’s a fact. Booker T Washington said, “Success isn’t measured by the position you reach in life; it’s measured by the obstacles you overcome.” Learning how to enjoy the journey means we must learn to learn how to deal with discouragement. Failure isn’t permanent unless it was our last attempt. It’s a choice.
In 1927, Lucille Ball was told by an instructor at the John Murray Anderson Drama School, “Try any other profession. Any other.” Words less harsh than these have ended the dreams and aspirations of countless hopefuls. Lucille persisted and proved that ‘expert’ wrong. During an interview years later when Lucille was the star of America’s favorite television show “I Love Lucy,” she was asked the secret of her success. Lucy said, "One of the things I learned the hard way was that it doesn't pay to get discouraged. Keeping busy and making optimism a way of life can restore your faith in yourself."
For seven long and discouraging years, Chester Carlson, a young inventor took his idea to twenty corporations. All of them turned Chester down. The Haloid Corporation finally purchased the right’s to Carlson’s electrostatic paper-copying process. Are you familiar with the Haloid Corporation? Perhaps not, but everyone knows the company it became – the Xerox Corporation.
Teens in 2006 and in the 60’s have one musical group in common. It is a multi-generation success story that could have been stopped by discouragement. Decca records, a top label, could have ended this musical journey with their major rejection. Decca Recording Company executives responded negatively to the audition of four shaggy haired musicians. They told the group’s agent, “We don’t like their sound. Groups of guitars are on the way out.” The four musicians didn’t stop. The Beatles took their sound elsewhere and the rest is musical history.
Do something positive in pursuit of your goals, today. Doubling your failure rate, might be just what you need.
Thomas John Watson, Sr. founder of IBM was asked for his success formula. Watson explained…
“It's quite simple, really. Double your rate of failure...
You're thinking of failure as the enemy of success.
But it isn't at all... You can be discouraged by failure--or you can learn from it.
So go ahead and make mistakes. Make all you can.
Because, remember that's where you'll find success. On the far side."
Don’t be discouraged if you are not finding the acceptance and success you desire today. Take the next step and enjoy the journey. You are one step closer.
