Randy Haugen & Valorie Haugen: First Things First

Randy Haugen, “Real leaders display self confidence while retaining a spirit of humility. They understand that they do not stand-alone. This leadership insight comes from CEO of Baxter Intl.”

Randy Haugen: Leadership Wit and Wisdom

“Leadership is a delicate blend of self-confidence and humility. You have to have the self-confidence to say, ‘You don’t want to make that decision without my input!’ But self-confidence without humility becomes a problem. I may be the CEO. But part of that was having a few skills, and part of it was luck. Part of it was the man upstairs. Self-confidence and humility: Blend those two together and you have someone who has a good chance of leading effectively.

Billy Florence - Leadership Determination

Bobby Jones Was Determination In Action
by Billy Florence

At age 14, Bobby Jones was considered the greatest golfing prospect in the world. At age 21, he was considered the greatest disappointment in the history of the sport. At age 28, he was considered the greatest that had ever played the game. These fourteen years were dubbed by Atlanta newspaper man O. B. Keeler “Seven lean years and seven fat years,” and defined in startling relief the power of determination in fulfilling a person’s potential.

Jones was his own worst enemy during his teen years. He was plagued by a driving perfectionism that would accept nothing short of infallible excellence in his play – a tall order for a young man battling the pressures of an adoring and expectant public in addition to the normal anxieties of adolescence. A particularly bad outing could throw him into a tailspin of self-criticism that would damage his game for weeks at a time. In addition, he possessed an inordinately bad temper and was given to embarrassing tantrums on and off the links. Grantland Rice said of Jones that he had “the face of an angel and the temper of a timber wolf.”

But a single day, a single hole, a single shot seemed to turn it all around for Jones. On the 18th hole of the final round of the 1923 US Open, Jones hit a near-perfect shot out of the rough which landed eight feet from the hole and ensured his first ever major golf championship. Over the next seven years, he won 13 of the 21 major championships he entered, culminating his career by winning all four major championships in a single season (1930) – to this day the only golfer ever to accomplish the feat. Jones retired from golf at 28, but his influence on the game was only beginning. He invented the modern system of identifying clubs by numbers instead of names, and helped to design the Augusta National golf course, home of the Masters Tournament.

Jones’s was a promising life that seemed headed for disappointment and despair. Instead, he identified and overcame the obstacles before him, and unleashed his potential as few have done before him or since. His story is an enduring testimony to the power of human determination.

“Competitive golf is played mainly on a five-and-a-half inch course – the space between your ears.” -- Bobby Jones

Billy Florence, “Read more on Jones’s remarkable life and career at BobbyJones.com.”

About Leadership Avenue columnist Billy Florence

The people we've chosen to write about have/had their quota of human failings and foibles just like the rest of us... But they share one transcendent quality: All of them in some way, at some time, acted courageously. Billy Florence, is focusing on Bobby Jones challenges as well as accomplishments because this better equips us to lead.

Billy Florence - Staying Debt-Free This Season

American shoppers are intent on continuing their trend toward using more cash and debit cards for holiday purchases rather than relying totally on credit cards. Credit card spending was up last holiday shopping season. According to VISA, holiday spending on their cards last year totaled $257 billion, an increase of 17.5 percent over last season.

Experts offer specific steps to avoid a New Year spending spree hang over. They advise holiday shoppers to set a firm budget, followed by planning each individual purchase and subtracting each purchase from your budget total. If December brings big budget pressure, they suggest increasing gift creativity rather than increasing spending. Trimming the gift list can also provide some financial relief. Consider these six tips for avoiding a financial pinch in the New Year.

SIX TIPS FOR A DEBT FREE HOLIDAY SEASON

1. Set Budget Write Shopping Plan
Determine how much you can reasonably spend this holiday. That should be your maximum amount. Then determine how much of that total you will spend on each individual.

2. Track and Trim
Track your expenses and spending as you go. Waiting until January when you get the credit card statement is too late to avoid unnecessary debt. If you are spending more on family members than you planned, consider trimming that gift list. Replacing a quickly purchased gift with a personal letter tucked in a card may be just the right solution for you and the recipient.

3. Shop Online
Wise online shopping can save you time, gas money, and the aggravation of crowded stores and parking a mile from the building. You can enjoy windows and displays without parting with your hard earned cash. If you do shop online during December, make your credit card “pay off plan.” The National Retail Federation says most of us will spend $800 for the holidays. If you charge that $800 dollars and are only paying the minimum monthly installment, it could take more than 10 years to pay it off. And the credit card company will make more than $1,000 in interest and fees.

4. Get Creative
Gifts that say “personal touch” created by you are the ones most often enthusiastically consumed or lovingly wrapped in tissue paper to be enjoyed in many future holiday seasons. The internet can be an excellent resource for holiday recipes and crafts.

5. Avoid Shopping Over Load
Before heading back to the mall or the Internet, pause and take a mental inventory. The lack of time can sometimes encourage us to over spend. Stop for a hot chocolate and take inventory of your remaining budget funds and your gift lists. A music and graphic enabled email with a personal note of appreciation, tells the recipient you value their friendship. Cost is usually free.

6. The Reason for the Season
Giving to a favorite, reliable charity on behalf of your family and friends in lieu of individual gifts can help you focus on the real reason for the season. Your personal card to each can then allow them to share in the joy of helping the needy.

Billy Florence - TEAM Book Review

How I Raised Myself From Failure To Success Through Selling - A easy to read life skills and business skills gem by Frank Bettger

FROM BILLY FLORENCE: I did judge this book by its cover and its title. When I saw How I Raised Myself From Failure to Success Through Selling for the first time, the last skill I wanted to acquire was that of “salesman.” I was a pilot at the time. That’s not a job known for developing exceptional people skills.

Billy Florence about the book’s benefits: I learned how to be a better listener from Bettger’s book. The discipline of focusing on the other person’s needs – first – is valuable in every profession and to every person. Plus, if you are interested in learning what single word can change your effectiveness in business – read this book.

FROM THE PUBLISHER:
How I Raised Myself From Failure To Success In Selling
Develop the style, spirit, and techniques of a first-rate salesperson. Bettger teaches how to accelerate enthusiasm, conquer fear, develop confidence, and deliver a winning presentation using his own story of success. He shows you how to see what the client will perceive as an important need, and then create a plan to fill that need. In his own story, often the client had not yet anticipated the need, but Bettger placed the facts before the client, understanding the kind of person the client was, and made the sale. Learn to develop these attitudes and skills to become a better salesperson.

Fred Harteis: Successful Relationships and Responsibility

Fred Harteis, “Sometimes people’s behavior toward us can be something of a mystery. What is their thinking for this behavior we sometimes ask ourselves? I’ve learned that people treat others according to how they see themselves rather than how you really are.”

Fred Harteis: Leadership Wit and Wisdom

The key to successful relationships really gets down to responsibility. I am responsible for how I treat others. I may not be responsible for how they treat me, but I am responsible for my reaction to those who are difficult. I can’t choose how you’ll treat me, but I can choose how I will respond to you. – J.C. About Fred Harteis & Linda Harteis

Fred Harteis and Linda Harteis are great leaders. They have developed successful businesses and been committed to helping others succeed as well. Take a moment to read about great leaders Fred and Linda Harteis...

Fred Harteis Biography

When Fred Harteis and his wife Linda were first married their future looked bright. Fred had a college degree, good work ethic and was open to personal growth. While Fred Harteis was in Agricultural Education and Building Trades, plus working several part-time jobs, Linda worked full-time in a bank.

When The Harteis Family began to grow, Mr. and Mrs. Harteis decided the children would benefit greatly if Linda left her job and had the time to dedicate to being the mom she wanted to be. The full-time and part-time jobs still proved inadequate to support the family. Fred Harteis began expanding his thinking into business ownership. After building several businesses Mr. Harteis realized the Quixtar Business System was a perfect fit. Linda Harteis could work with her husband to develop a business system to help people achieve their goals in life, as a family.

Today, Fred and Linda Harteis with Harteis International, Inc. and iTEAM have assisted tens of thousands of people build their business by teaching financial education, business principals and economic principals. Team's Chris Brady - Invisible Economy

Chris Brady wrote a great article that I think all Independent Business Owners should read. He talks about the "Invisible Economy." Here is a summary of Chris Brady's article found on Chris Brady's official web site.

The following article, "Invisible Economy," was written by Chris Brady, a Team-affiliated IBO. In the article, Chris discusses how the Industrial Age is over and the Information Age is here. Businesses in the Information Age are difficult to understand because, Chris contends, nearly everyone is still stuck in Industrial Age thinking.

Chris goes on to explain that Information Age businesses, such as those run by independent business owners associated with the Team, are invisible businesses. They are invisible businesses because product stocking, handling and shipping all happen in the background, unlike traditional businesses. However many business owners affiliated with the Team have proven their businesses to be among the most explosive to be involved in, once viewed with Information Age thinking.

Randy Haugen: Winning Is A Process Not A Game Score

Randy Haugen, “Emmit Smith recently won a national dancing competition. The discipline he applied to that opportunity was learned during his NFL career with the Dallas Cowboys. His win reminded me of a story I’d heard about Emmitt and Thurman Thomas.”

Randy Haugen Leadership Favorite: Leaders Encourage

In 1994, Thurman Thomas, head bowed with his hands covering his face, sat on the Buffalo Bills bench following his team’s fourth straight Super Bowl loss. His three fumbles had helped seal their awful fate.

Suddenly, standing before him was the Dallas Cowboys’ star running back Emmitt Smith. Just named MVP for Super Bowl XXVIII, Smith was carrying his small goddaughter. Smith looked down at her and said, “I want you to meet the greatest running back in the NFL, Mr. Thurman Thomas.”

Billy Florence : Fred, who in history has influenced your leadership style?

Fred Harteis: Abraham Lincoln is one.

Billy Florence: Why Lincoln , Fred?

Fred Harteis:Lincoln had to unite a divided people and lead for the good of the nation.

Billy Florence: What else do you see as a secret of Lincoln's leadership style?

Fred Harteis: His faith, love of reading and caring for people.

Billy Florence: Reading?

Fred Harteis:Lincoln placed a high value on reading good books and continuing his education. The majority of his education was in a home school environment.

Billy Florence: Have you benefited personally, Fred from studying the life of Lincoln?

Harteis: Yes! I'd suggest to anyone interested in leadership to read the book "Lincoln on Leadership."

Billy Florence: If there some characteristic of Lincoln that comes to mind, Fred?

Fred Harteis:Lincoln was a humble man who was wiling to over look the weaknesses of those around him, to focus on what they could accomplish to help the nation.

Billy Florence: Any final tip, Fred?

Harteis: We all have great potential; most just lack the direction and inspiration. I encourage people to find an atmosphere that provides and promotes personal and professional development.

Fred Harteis & Linda Harteis: Historic Holiday Moments

Fred Harteis, “Commemorated in history books and painting, perhaps the greatest importance of Washington’s Delaware River crossing is its motivational impact of the American people. As of 2004 the oil painting commemorating the event was a permanent exhibit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.”

Fred Harteis and Linda Harteis: Great Holiday Moments American History

The picture of Washington crossing the Delaware River is captured in countless history books. This unconventional attack began on Christmas night, 1776 with the crossing to Trenton, New Jersey, the Hessian winter headquarters.

After months of defeat, Washington's men quickly overwhelmed the Germans' defenses, and by 9:30 a.m. the town was surrounded. Although several hundred Hessians escaped, nearly 1,000 were captured at the cost of only four American lives. The battle was won. When this good news eventually reached the weary and worried American colonists, it provided much needed encouragement to persist in their cause of freedom.

Billy Florence - Holiday Sales Growth Soars

Online retailers are expecting hyper-growth in holiday sales this year as a record number of people say they plan to shop online. One-in-five online retailers report expecting to experience hyper-growth this year. Hyper-growth is defined as an increase of 75 percent or more over last year.

Growth: An additional third plan to experience ‘strong growth’ from 30-74 percent and one in five are projecting growth between 15-29 percent over last holiday. The growth-focused retailers’ holiday marketing arsenal includes tactics such as: more free shipping, earlier sales and promotions, broader participation in shopping search engines, and testing new communication channels such as blogs and RSS. Nearly half (47.1%) of consumers say they plan to shop online this year, up from 36.0 percent three years ago.

More Free Shipping and Sales: The customer has spoken. Four out of five shoppers will be making their online purchase decision based on free shipping and plan to start their shopping early.

An increasing number of online retailers will offer shipping promotions this year including free shipping with or without conditions and discounted shipping. Two years ago, only 64 percent of online retailers offered free shipping with conditions; this year, 83 percent of retailers will be offering the promotion. Many retailers will also be adding “early shopper” discounts. Companies offering “first time buyer” discount are up. More than one-third of retailers will be offering it this year.

Customer Communications: Most online retailers (97.4%) will be investing in search engine marketing and comparison shopping engines (73.1%). Companies are also using more unconventional online marketing strategies with 41.6 percent of retailers incorporating blogs or RSS feeds and 79.5 percent of retailers using viral marketing. Offline, retailers will invest in traditional media advertising in newspapers (44%), magazines (52%), radio (31.6%), and television (26.3%).

Budgets Up: The National Retail Federation says the average shopper is expected to spend nearly $800 this year, up from $738 last year. Self-gifting is also on the shopping list with shoppers planning to spend an additional $99 on themselves.

Billy Florence & Peggy Florence: A Holiday Tale of Giving

Billy Florence, “This Christmas classic tale from the pen of William Sydney Porter (a.k.a. O. Henry) captures the essence of gift giving -- selflessness.”

Billy Florence and Peggy Florence: Holiday Season Favorite

The inspirational message of love and giving, The Gift of The Magi, was penned by O. Henry (William Sydney Porter) in 1906. O. Henry tells his readers, “The magi, as you know, were wise men--wonderfully wise men--who brought gifts to the Babe in the manger. They invented the art of giving Christmas presents.”

The art of this O. Henry short story is of a young couple, Della and Jim Dillingham Young, giving all they had for Christmas. Some would say Della and Jim ended up with nothing. We would say they ended up with everything that matters at Christmas time.

I may have mentioned these steps by Dave Ramsey before but they are worth sharing again. Do you ever wonder what financial priorities should come first? Dave Ramsey addresses this in his book Total Money Makeover. He gives his financial baby steps on what people should do first. They are...

$1,000 to start an emergency fund

Pay off all debt using the debt snowball

Three to six months of expenses in savings

Invest 15 percent of household income into Roth IRAs and pre-tax retirement

College funding for children

Pay off home early

Build wealth and give! Continue to invest in mutual funds and real estate.

Billy Florence & Peggy Florence, “When building a team for a winning sports season, for business or charity each person can bring a unique talent or skill that makes the end result work better than any of the people or “ingredients” could offer separately. As this story explains…”

Billy Florence and Peggy Florence Team Work Wisdom Favorite

When complimented on her flaky and moist homemade biscuits, the head of the school cafeteria explained to the parent, “Just consider what goes into the making of these biscuits. The flower itself doesn’t taste good, neither does the baking powder, nor the shortening, nor the other ingredients. However, when I mix them all together and put them in the oven, they come out just right.”

The ingredients working together create the win.
