Fred Harteis & Linda Harteis: Historic Holiday Moments
Fred Harteis, “Commemorated in history books and painting, perhaps the greatest importance of Washington’s Delaware River crossing is its motivational impact of the American people. As of 2004 the oil painting commemorating the event was a permanent exhibit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.”
Fred Harteis and Linda Harteis: Great Holiday Moments American History
The picture of Washington crossing the Delaware River is captured in countless history books. This unconventional attack began on Christmas night, 1776 with the crossing to Trenton, New Jersey, the Hessian winter headquarters.
After months of defeat, Washington's men quickly overwhelmed the Germans' defenses, and by 9:30 a.m. the town was surrounded. Although several hundred Hessians escaped, nearly 1,000 were captured at the cost of only four American lives. The battle was won. When this good news eventually reached the weary and worried American colonists, it provided much needed encouragement to persist in their cause of freedom.
