Jody Victor & Kathy Victor - Great Moments In America

Kathy Victor, “One of the most moving moments in America’s historic music came to us in 1861 from Julia Ward Howe. You’ve heard the words to her lyric poem. Ms. Howe was paid $5.00 for what was to become a piece of America’s music history. The impact was priceless.”

JODY VICTOR: MUSICAL MOMENTS

The year was 1861; Julia Ward Howe was watching the campfires of soldiers bivouacked around Washington DC, when the words that became the lyrical poem “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” began flowing into her mind. She submitted her work to the Atlantic Monthly magazine, and it was published early in 1862. It became an instant hit across the north.
