I was in 1806, that Lt. Zebulon Montgomery Pike sighted a mountain peak that now bears his name. Lt. Pike was leading a survey party to explore and map the newly purchased Louisiana Purchase territory. The mountaintop towered at 14,110 feet.
It became a goal or mile marker to pioneers heading west. “Pike’s Peak or bust was the familiar slogan of many wagon trains during the 1800’s. It was a goal they could see before them.
Today Pike’s Peak continues to be Colorado’s most famous landmark.
